radiant energyRadiant energy is a type of energy that is produced by electromagnetic waves and is measured by integrating radiant flux with time. In simple terms, radiant energy is any form of energy that can be moved from one surface to another without any need for a carrying medium.

The unit of measurement of radiant energy is the joule. This type of energy is most commonly associated with solar energy and radiometry.

The sun is considered the primary radiant energy generator, and energy can be collected using various natural or mad-made collectors. A good example of a natural collector is the atmosphere of the earth.

Main sources  of radiant energy

Visible Light
Visible light is the waves in the electromagnetic spectrum that can be seen by the human eye. These waves move in different frequencies, which is the reason for the difference in colors that humans see. The colors are a result of the waves bouncing off nearby surfaces and in the absorption and reflection of light from surfaces.

Radio waves
These are weak sources of radiant energy since they are a low form of electromagnetic energy. These are often used for wireless transmission of sound waves or wireless relay of data. The frequency of radio waves is grouped into ranges or bands. A good example is radio waves, which are grouped into identifiable channels.

UV waves
These come from sunlight and are the source of all light energy on earth. Sunlight produces radiant energy in the form of UVA, UVB, and UBC rays, with the latter two normally blocked out by the earth’s ozone layer. Black lights are also good sources of UV rays. These emit long UV waves but do not emit any visible light.

Gamma Waves
These are waves on the far end of the electromagnetic spectrum, which are produced by the interactions between subatomic particles. They contain the most amount of power and they have the shortest rays of any energy in the spectrum. Because of their intensity, they can cause harmful effects on living organisms, the most common of which is the alteration of molecular properties that can result to mutations.

Uses of radiant energy

Radiant energy can be used for various applications just like any other source of energy. It can be used to heat water or entire rooms. Radiant energy works better in warming rooms since the energy comes out from a warm element such as the floor or heating panel instead of directly heating the air in the room. Radiant energy also has very practical applications in communication and data sharing, as well as in medical imaging and diagnosis.
